The Honda company was founded by Soichiro Honda, who got his start as a mechanic. He began the Tokai Seiki company to produce piston rings for Toyota. When WWII started, Toyota took a 40% stake in the company. After a bombing attack in 1944 and an earthquake the following year destroyed both of his plants, Honda sold the remains of the company to Toyota and used that money to found the Honda Technical Research Institute. They began by selling motorized bicycles and produced their first complete motorcycle, the Model D, in 1949. In 1963, Honda built his first production automobile, the T360 mini pick-up truck, and a couple months later his first sports car, the S500.
